Lyrics

Suffer, Little Children

Suffer little children who came seeking shelter
And found instead a world of men indifferent and cold
As if in their empty hearts sympathy was never felt or
They’d never had a child of their own to hold

Suffer, little children we keep locked up in cages
Is this the way that Christian should behave?
Where is the love based on your holy rock of ages?
Is this the message of your prayers and faith

The answer, my friend, is not difficult to see
It’s not floating in the air upon some breeze
The answer is clear – it’s there in every mirror
Staring right back at you and me

Have you ever held a child in your arms a-cryin’
Broken-hearted in its sobbing and its tears
Well in these darkening times Aussie fairness lies a-dyin’
And so we live in cruel and dreadful years

Is this what Christians do, is this your morality
With hollow hymns and prayers in church to guide you
That show you what you want to see, ignoring the hypocrisy
Of talking at some god you think stands beside you

Accursed are the cowards who turn their backs on their belief
Blessed are brave who live up to heir ideals
Who do what they ought and not what they’ve been taught
For to be hard is not being strong when what you do is wrong

The answer, my friend, is not difficult to see
It’s not floating in the air upon some breeze
The answer is clear – it’s there in every mirror
Staring right back at you and me
